The Big Picture, As I See It

Along with the things going on at the 1850 house, we also have been dealing with selling our current home. From a certain angle, our "new" house and our "old" house are very similar.

This was not intentional... really.

We listed it at the beginning of January, had an offer by mid February, and are now just over three weeks from closing. This forced us to think about what to do with all our stuff. My knee jerk reaction was to start looking at storage options. The house needs to be restored. The shed is falling down. The barn is falling down.

It appeared that we had to get more storage space. So I started searching the Internet and making some calls.

The portable storage units are too small. We'd have to get 4 or 5 of them. Not at all cost effective.

A 40 foot shipping container costs around $125 per month to rent, plus delivery, and you have to make sure that you air it out on a frequent regular basis to minimize condensation problems.

A military surplus storage container costs $4,000. Also a big metal box with condensation issues.

We're already paying $175 per month for a couple of storage units up the road.

And then I took a step back. I decided it was crazy to pay for more storage when we have a 3,100 square foot house, a 16' x 16' shed, and a 24' x 60' barn with 3 lofts. Plus the mobile home! We're just going to have to suck it up and play a shell game.

The overall plan now is; 1) Get a mobile home set and connected. 2) Move our essentials to the mobile home - everything else to the house. 3) Rebuild the shed. 4) Stabilize the barn so it doesn't get worse. 5) Empty out the house, putting everything into the shed and the barn. 6) Fix the house. Easy!
