Slabbed

 19 July 2021

After weeks and weeks of very slow progress on the work to prepare for the concrete slab, our concrete guy finally had some time in his schedule for us.

I had done about half of the form work. Rick Wendt and his crew finished it up.

Then they installed the moisture barrier, rebar, and wire mesh.

We came back from vacation and it was done!

Amy has also been working on finishing the mantel in the study. After some practice on some cardboard, she faux finished the new wood parts and then applied a coat of shellac.

The study is now finished!

Also I have made a little bit more progress on the railing.

  1. Looks like great progress! As I have learned from experience (after doing it backwards), having a nice garage/workshop makes ALL your other projects easier. I started restoring our first house with all my tools in the basement, and either toting them outside and back in every time, or making clouds of dust in the basement. I won't make that mistake again!

If I can offer one bit of advice on the garage, it would be to pour a short concrete stem wall or lay one or two courses of CMU (doweled into the slab and grouted) to build the walls on. Both our houses had the garages built on monolithic slabs with the wood sill built directly on the slab surface, and they were both rotted into compost when we bought them.

    1. Thanks Seth! Yes, for most of our restoration work I had been able to set up a work space somewhere inside. But once we finished all the rooms, we found ourselves without anywhere to set up for millwork or fabrication work that wasn't in the way of our day to day activities and dependent on good weather. Having a workshop and storage will really help us out.

The building is going to be steel. Not our first choice, but of course lumber prices are through the roof and I would have wanted to build it myself, adding much more time before we could start using it.
