Rising Up To The Challenge

17 April 2019

We continued to work on rebuilding the wrap-around porch. We tried to re-use as much of the old porch floor boards as we could. It ended up being about 50% that we had to replace with new deck boards that we turned in to tongue and groove floor boards.

So with the last board in place, for the first time since we've been here, and for a long time before that, you can walk on the porch from the north side kitchen door all the way around to the front door without risking serious injury.

We also finished repairing the fireplace.

Not up to code for wood burning. It would take way too much time, effort, and money than what it's worth to use to go that route. But it should work fine for a gas insert. Despite appearances, I've tried mixing in a little concrete colorant with my home made Type K mortar and it's helping the new mortar blend with the old much better.

This allowed us to finish putting back all the bead board in the kitchen.

And finally, FINALLY, we got started on fixing the damage to the roof on the second floor!

A huge thanks to Jessie Swaney who runs his own saw mill in Denton. He was able to provide us with some rough sawn 1"x10" boards to repair the roof sheathing!

Who needs a drone when you can get yourself 35 feet up in the air!
