This years' cicadas came out in force. Up in the Greensboro area where we used to live there have been none this year, which is probably why we didn't notice them 17 years ago - but now we sure do! It's been interesting because there seem to be two types active at the same time. The vast majority make a 'whirring' sound and for the most part seem to concentrate in large groups that move around day to day. The other ones make a fast clicking sound, which I'm more used to hearing.
This area of the house has seen a big improvement/change.
This is the before...
I've just finished reading your blog from the beginning, and have found your resurrection of this house breathtakingly impressive! Congratulations on the application of so many diverse building skills, on completing the (beautiful) exterior painting, and on getting the house on the historic registry. I'd be curious to read some time more of what inspired you two to take on such a project—you obviously have not just the skills but also the essential patience to persevere. Also, a few years in, how do you feel about your approach to air sealing? I'm a total armchair house-lover, but I do enjoy listening to The Fine Homebuilding podcast where they seem to advocate strongly the same emphasis on tightening up the envelope, even for old houses. – Emily B. in Minnesota
