Another Year - More of This and That

18 February 2024

It was a busy holiday season at the end of 2023, and a busy start to 2024. Unfortunately, the busy didn't involve very much work on the house. Nevertheless, a few things have gotten done.

The roof pocket created by the porch and three sides of the house is difficult to access with the boom lift. For Amy to start painting there, we had to construct a platform to work on. I built a frame that is just resting on the roof surface and covered it with decking.

From the platform, Amy could set up whatever ladders she needed to work in this area.

As real winter weather set in, we moved the work platform off to the middle so that rain water wouldn't splash up off of it onto the windows.

We also removed or moved the bushes that were in front of the house, giving us the first unobstructed view from this angle.

Most recently, we replaced the plain brass handle set on one of the front doors with a more ornate set. It's larger, so I had to do a little more chisel work to make the mortise larger.

The 'new' lock set is interesting because you can lock the knob so that it doesn't turn. Once the door is closed, you need a small key that goes into the upper keyhole. Turning it pulls the spring latch back so that the door can be opened. The lower keyhole is for locking and unlocking with the deadbolt.
