Post About Posts

More progress on the back porch!

Crown molding and trim have gone up.

The porch needs posts. We have been on the lookout during our travels for posts similar to what we have on the front and side, but no luck. I ended up getting new posts from a big box store. Not quite as shapely as our old posts, but similar looking enough, and similar size. The big difference is that the unturned sections of these new posts are sized for 36" railings, you know, because of code. We want them to match our existing posts. The top section needs to be 20-1/2" tall so we can fit the corbels and brackets.

So I cut a length off the bottom of the post and attached it to the top. Biscuit joinery is what will work best here, so time to buy a new tool!

In order to help prevent the rot that has damaged some of the old posts at the bottom, I sealed the bottom of the posts with several coats of oil based stain, and then attached these PVC blocks. I also put bug screen between the block and post so insects could won't walk/fly up inside the posts.

We decided to have 4 free standing posts, and half a post on each end, so gotta cut one in half.

Just look at those great biscuit joints!

To secure the tops of the posts, I screwed in a short block that fits inside the hollow of the post.

All the posts are in!

Amy came behind me and painted everything.

I put up one of our ceiling fans.

And then started completing the outside trim and finishes.

Then put up the other ceiling fan.
