Work, And Life In General

 18 October 2021

Things are progressing here, just a bit slowly. Our family life, work life, and life in general are keeping us busy, so less time to work on the house.

I have been focused on the workshop when I have the time to do it. I have been putting in two divider walls to give Amy her own space on the right side of the building and to create a dust containment area on the left side of the building for my wood working things.

To save money, we re-used as much of the lumber from the concrete forms as possible. That's why some of the 2x4s are grey. Tip for the day; it's a good idea to keep at least one old saw blade around so you don't mess up your nice sharp one cutting up salvaged wood. I sourced the plywood from Facebook market place. It had been used as protective packaging for some other product. Amazingly, some of the plywood is birch, mahogany, and oak veneer for only $15 per sheet!

As a perk for Amy being in the antiques business, I also get to use her cast offs. After pulling all of the fabric tacks out of the rubber tires, I'll use this cart for material storage and transport around the shop. The original vertical handles on these carts were elegant in their own way and fit well in your hand when you grab them. Unfortunately, when they were broken or lost, the workers would just grab whatever scrap they could find, put an angle cut on the bottom and go. Of course, you know that I'm going to make new handles patterned on a few originals that we have.

Amy continues to work on the painting, which is looking great!

We had originally painted the gingerbread at the top of the gables the same cream color as the rest of the trim. But after looking at it for a couple of weeks we decided that it didn't stand out enough.

So we changed it to the red color and think it looks much better. In this photo, you can see that Amy also has all three front doors painted now.
