Lights Up

11 February 2020

Amy and I have been putting up some of the light fixtures that we have been saving and accumulating. Some have just needed to be cleaned. Others needed some wiring attention as well.

This one is in the study.

This one is in the kitchen over the possum belly table

This one is in the master bath/closet area.

Another little table lamp that we have had for a while is finally fully dressed. It uses UNO lamp shades that screw on to some threads at the top of the bulb socket. We have been searching and searching for UNO shades that we thought would look nice. We have searched the Internet and antique shops all around the country to no avail. We eventually decided to just find some chandelier clip on shades that we like. I cut out the center bulb clips and epoxied an UNO ring in to the middle. Probably should have done this a while ago.

Amy has been making lots of progress removing the old shellac in the study. We're going through lots and lots of rags and denatured alcohol, but the room will be beautiful, and not nearly so dark, when she's done. The plan is to go back with amber shellac.

I have continued to work on the two walk in showers. This is the first time I've tried the Schluter Kerdi product, so my level of trust is a little low. The Kerdi material is applied with thin set mortar, which to my knowledge is not water proof. So I decided to add a little insurance with a coat of RedGard on the seams and joints. I'm not running the Kerdi membrane up the walls here because they will be covered with interlocking composite tiles, as opposed to ceramic tile, to keep the weight load as low as we can.

The master shower pan passes its water test.

The downstairs on-suite gets the same treatment.

This shower will have tile on the floor and walls, so I did the whole room with the Kerdi membrane, again putting RedGard on the joints and seams.

It too passes a water leak test.

Our pantry also got an upgrade. Our neighbors mother comes to visit from England once a year and stays for a few weeks. She's very good at sewing, so we commissioned her to make some ruffle curtains for the bottom shelf...

And to hide our microwave oven!
