We're Moving!!!

25 October 2019

Sorry for the long delay in getting another post up. The last 5 weeks have been very busy. But yes, the post title is correct, we are finally moving in to our house! Since my last post, we had to pass our final electrical inspection, our final mechanical inspection, and approval for temporary occupancy from our building inspector.

To pass the electrical inspection, my primary task was to get the breaker panel finished. I really enjoyed this particular project, and it was very satisfying to get this done.

My handyman nature really shines here when you notice that I planned ahead and instead of installing bead board all around the breaker panel, I put a removable panel above and below the box. Function over form!

Passing the mechanical inspection was for the most part out of our hands. I think the inspector came out 4 times before we got a thumbs up. Once we had approval for occupancy, the final step was getting the 200 amp electrical service buried and connected. This turned out to be an agonizingly slow process compared to how quick and easy it was to get electricity to the mobile home. My job was to dig out the water line so that they didn't damage it while trenching for the electrical wire.

While we waited for Energy United and its subcontractors to go through their motions, Amy worked on staining and finishing trim, and I worked on hanging doors and repairing, refurbishing and installing old door hardware.

We were actually in Tennessee for a wedding when our electricity finally got turned on. When we got back we were able to turn on the water heater and refrigerator. It would be another day before our HVAC company could come out and get the heat pump systems running.

So here we are! There's still a lot to be done, but it is so satisfying to be able to live in the house while we continue our restoration projects.

Master bedroom

Master bathroom

Master closet

Upstairs front bedroom

Jack and Jill bathroom

Upstairs back bedroom - we haven't worked on this room yet, so still used for storage.

Downstairs bedroom

Downstairs on suite bathroom

Parlor, also still being used for storage.

Living room

Office, more storage for now.

Dining room and kitchen

Foyer, doing double duty as living space and storage.

Laundry and (temporary) pantry

There's still much to be done. We haven't done much of anything to the exterior yet. but it sure feels great to be in the house! A nice reward for nearly 3 years of work.
