What's Old Is New Again, But Still Old

17 February 2019

We continued using the bead board salvaged from the old Marion Phillips house to cover the north wall in our upstairs front bedroom.

Amy ran our miter saw in the hallway to cut the boards to length.

And the front bedroom is ready to have the trim put back up!

We also covered the ceiling and walls in the Jack-n-Jill bathroom just off this bedroom.

We don't have enough bead board to do all the walls, so where it's easiest, we're using beaded plywood from Lowe's. It matches the bead pattern of the narrowest bead board, so it should all look the same once it's painted.

We also finished putting back the porch ceiling. We used more salvaged bead board to replace what was broken or rotted.

Red Hills Lumber in Thomasville GA finished our flooring order and shipped it to a local freight terminal. They did a fantastic job for us, managing to provide us with 7/8" thick tongue and groove, quarter sawn floor boards at a very reasonable cost. I went and picked it up at the freight terminal.

Then Amy and I moved it in to the house and stacked it.

After a couple weeks of acclimating, installing it took just over a day.

Then on to a coat of stain.

Out cat Sassy even lent us a paw.

Beautiful!

We also stained the floor in the downstairs master bedroom that Amy had finished sanding recently.

The fireplace in the kitchen is going to need to be rebuilt, so prior to the new floor going in, I worked on removing what we have to replace and cleaning out all the excess mortar.

I had knocked out the existing firebox walls, and the old brick on the sides wasn't up to holding the lintel in place any longer, so it fell out along with some bricks above it. I wasn't working on it at the time, so no real harm done.

It's all cleaned out and ready, I think, for new masonry work. We're most likely going to pay someone to redo this for us.

Someone in the past had knocked through the chimney wall to add a wood stove. I cleaned that hole out too.

We also started putting some of the bead board back up on the kitchen walls. So exciting to see this progress!

And no, we still haven't gotten started on repairing the tree damage to the top corner of the house...
