Starting On The Porch

27 November 2018

To repair the damage to the house from the tree, I decided to start working on the porch roof first. It seemed reasonable to do this rather than work around the broken porch to fix the roof on the second floor.

We cleaned up all the debris on the ground, salvaging what we could.

Then I laid out a bunch of deck boards for a temporary floor so that we could work on the underside of the porch roof.

Next we supported the dangling corner. One of our neighbors, Issac, came over to lend a hand. I'm wearing an old caving helmet which I have kept since I was in high school because, you know, some day you might need one. Yes!

Then we could start cleaning off the porch roof.

We removed the bead board from the porch roof ceiling.

Then we removed the roof shingles and roofing paper.

Then we removed the roof sheathing. Most of these are 1" x 8" rough sawn boards except for a few repair pieces that are modern 1x boards that are actually 3/4" thick.

Here you can see some broken rafters. Also, the doubled and tripled rafter ties show that people have had to repair this porch in the past. Most likely from rotted wood from roof leaks.

After all the broken pieces were out of the way, we found that the parts of the porch that were still intact had pulled a little bit away from the house. I decided to tackle this problem first.

Time to break out the come-along and improvise a couple of anchor points.

It may not look like much, but this is the road to recovery. The repair is off to a slow start due to a previously planned trip, some health issues with my father, and the holidays. But I feel the momentum building.

P.S. In retrospect, I probably should have straightened out the cornice (band support beam) before trying to pull the porch roof back closer to the house. It worked out though, so onward we go.
