What Was In The Time Capsule?!

22 March 2017

So, it turns out that the time capsule was just the little hole surrounded by the words "Time Capsule".

The little round thing on top was a nickle. The rest of the hole was filled with wax, more loose change...

and a small bottle with a piece of blue paper rolled up inside.

We tried to pull the paper out of the bottle, but it was wet and wouldn't come out. So we broke the bottle open. It appears that Linda and her friends had left some great words of wisdom for us, but 28 years of soaking in perfume and the damp crawlspace environment made nearly all of the ink run. We found that it was most legible when it's wet, but still not good enough to transcribe it.

So we're left with 77 cents in loose change and an unreadable note. If there are any chemists out there who might have a way to make the note more legible using common house hold supplies, we'd love to hear how. All in all, a kind of disappointing time capsule.

Aside from this little diversion, I've been busy knocking down parts of the foundation wall under the utility room/pantry area next to the kitchen. The original wall had been replaced with poorly done cinderblock, and the original pier is leaning over.

We are going to replace this pier, add a new pier at the north west corner, and rebuild the skirt wall. For the two new piers, I'm going to use bricks from the chimney that we knocked down off of the bathroom addition. It took Amy and I a whole day to take some of this...

And turn it in to this.

Then I watched a YouTube video, and began my on-the-job training.

Just don't ask me to show you the back side.

Amy continued working on the grass wall paper in the second floor middle room with stunning results (if you're in to old bead board painted gray).
