So here we are, A year and 10 days since we purchased our property. It feels longer. This month has been busy with holidays, pleasant distractions (primarily two of them named Autumn and Adelaide), and unpleasant distractions (a strained back, a brief bout of nausea, and a head cold).
Nevertheless, we now stand poised to begin some real work on the house. We have stabilized the barn as much as we're going to in order to serve our short term purposes.
We straightened out the stairs...
I'm starting out by removing the porch flooring from around the outside of the kitchen...
And the flooring inside the kitchen. This is going to be a pain. The linoleum was installed on top of 1/4" plywood that was nailed to the original tongue and groove flooring. The plywood is too thin to come up in sheets and they used lots of nails. Every square foot will be a battle. It seems unlikely that the original flooring will be salvageable, but I'm hopeful.
We'll just have to find out next year!

Nevertheless, we now stand poised to begin some real work on the house. We have stabilized the barn as much as we're going to in order to serve our short term purposes.
We straightened out the stairs...
Raised and supported the threshing floor...
Organized our lumber...
Found a musket barrel...
And generally cleaned the place up.
We also put up a temporary shelter to store the beadboard and flooring that we will be removing from the house.
Our next step will be to repair the structure and foundation in the kitchen/dining room area. The blue arrow is where the wall and roof line have dipped down. This happened because at some point they moved the exterior wall outward about 2 feet (yellow arrow) leaving nothing to support the short wall and roof above it. There is also no support beam under the current exterior wall location (red arrow) so it has dropped downward also.
