Field of Dreams

6 February 2016

This past week at our old house has seen a small flurry of activity. We decided to go ahead and get a new septic tank and drain field installed. We wanted to make sure that the septic system going forward is in good working order and has the capacity to support 4 bedrooms.

We found the original septic tank, located approximately 15 feet from the right side of the house (where the small chimney is starting to fall away) is completely non function, i.e. full of dirt.

A second septic tank located the same distance from the house but approximately 15 feet closer to the road is at least not filled with dirt, but we don't know how big it is, and based on the tree growth in the drain field area, it is unlikely that it is working very well any longer.

Both of these septic tanks are also located too close to an existing well near the house in the back yard. The county requires that any well located within 100 feet of any part of a septic system be abandoned, i.e. filled in with dirt and capped with concrete. The well appears to us to be from the 1880-1890 era. Hand dug and lined with stone, guessing 40 to 50 feet deep. I will post an actual depth measurement and pictures in my next post. Since we (at the moment) are trying to preserve the history of this home, we felt it worthwhile to keep the well, even though we won't be using it.

The well is underneath the sheet of chipboard in the foreground.

We decided to hire Driggers Septic Tank Services out of Archdale, NC to do the work. Charles Driggers is very knowledgable and has been very helpful and professional. We would highly recommend him if you need any work done in this area. After talking about our plans, we agreed that Driggers would also clear the land we need to put a mobile home that we will live in while we are restoring the house. After obtaining a permit for a septic system repair, the work began.

And it begins.

This will be our view of the house from the mobile home.

The additional driveway from the street. It will be covered with gravel this coming week.
