Prologue

17 December 2015

Greetings! Welcome to my blog.

I have started this blog to chronicle the adventure of our purchase and restoration of a house, sitting on 21.7 acres, built around 1850, in central North Carolina. Our goal is to create a comfortable, inviting home where we can live in retirement and enjoy the company of friends and family.

I have been a successful handyman for the past 12 years and feel fairly confident about my knowledge and skills. This has lured me in to convincing my wife that everything is doable, it will just take a little time. My plan is to work on this house full time until it's finished, doing as much of it as I can by myself. My wife will continue her regular work to bring home the bacon (hehe). I have fixed a lot of different things up till  now, but never anything on this scale, or this profound. I will try to post my thoughts and actions as we focus on each aspect of fixing this house up. So stop by whenever you'd like a good chuckle, or if you think YOUR house has problems, or if you're curious to see how things go.

Here are some pictures of the house taken before we bought it.

We love the house, but as a close friend of mine put it, "it's really rough". Yes indeed.
First reaction - What Have We Gotten Ourselves In To?
Second thought - Where in the world do we start...?

Have a happy day!
Fritz

  1. Hi Fritz and Co! I found your blog through my house porn site, Old House Dreams, which I vicariously live through! I know you are a tradesman but your writing style is terrific, very warm and engaging. I am caught up on your blog now and look forward to the future! Best wishes!!!

  2. I love your blog. It is very similar to my husband’s and my experience with our 1914 home remodeling project which turned into more of a rebuilding project than we expected. The challenges have been numerous and almost incomprehensible over the last four years but the project is about to finally finish by the end of this year. I especially loved the part about the foundation and floor levitation which was so akin to our own story.
